In the center of the piazza stands the monument of the El Divino Nino—the Divine Child Jesus. Modeled after a small plaster statue produced by the cloistered Carmelites nuns in Madrid, Spain, this life-sized statue is sculpted of statuary white marble and red jasper. Serving as a symbol of the eager love of our God, the Child Jesus offers His Heart to all who approach Him.
Engraved on the four sides of the statue’s pedestal—in English, Spanish, Italian, and German—is the prophecy of Isaiah: “…and a little Child shall lead them” (11:6). This Scripture passage serves as a reminder of the beauty of childhood, most especially the significance of the Childhood of our Lord. The four languages represent the major languages of the craftsman and the artisans who labored with such diligence and love on the construction of the Temple.
